Personal

Tom was born in St Catharines, Ontario

Worked through many summers doing odd jobs for his Father in Harry’s Electric Construction Ltd..

Started part time Family Electrical/Lighting retail Business at 15 Years of age. Learning everything from sweeping the floors to changing light bulbs, even started his career of helping customers satisfy their needs.

All while attending “Governor Simcoe Secondary School” and “Niagara College Applied Arts & Technology” (General Business)

Tom also, attended “Columbia Bible Institute” in Clearbrook, British Columbia

Tom moved back to Ontario, with a career desire to work in the Family Retail side of the business and eventually take over “Sequence Lighting Ltd.” Tom quickly learned all aspects of Customer service and operating a business. Tom had several Mentors instructing, teaching, & training him, not to mention the “School of Hard Knocks”. During this period Tom also took many business courses, management courses.

In 1978 Tom was married, to Lois Ryan, six months later bought his first Real Estate, a Duplex (Semi Detached) Home in St Catharines.

Tom was promoted to Store Manager of the Lighting Electrical Retail store. Tom had 7 years in a row of 20% increase in sales over the previous year, through great customer service, great marketing, and a unique approach to business.

During those growth years the business was purchased, “Sequence Lighting Ltd.”, from Tom’s Father/Family.  Sequence Lighting Ltd. provided Lighting, Electrical products, and Central vac systems, Giftware, Grandfather & Wall Clocks. Sequence’s customer base was the General public, Designers, Decorators, and Niagara Hotel & Motels and of course Home Builders through out the Niagara Peninsula. Tom and his team helped Sequence Lighting develop and become, as quoted, by one of their greatest competitors, who said, “Sequence Lighting, was one of the ten Finest Lighting Showrooms in all of Ontario”.  This was at a time when there were over 300 Lighting stores within 60 Miles of Metropolitan Toronto.

Tom joined and helped start the “Oncan Buying Group” to increase buying power, improved marketing, and share great ideas. The Oncan grew from 8 Independent Lighting stores to 13 Stores throughout Ontario while Tom served as the President of the Oncan Group.  Tom was instrumental in, as a group negotiating container buys out of Hong Kong & Taipei, which individually would have been near impossible as store to do on its own. He attended the Lighting Conventions in Toronto, New York, & Dallas Texas. Toured and went on buying trips Factories through out the US and Canada.

In 1991 the government introduced the GST tax, causing the general public to boycott the new tax; they flocked to the US for their general & luxury needs. This created a very tough time for all businesses in southern Ontario including the (General Motors) Car business and Niagara Motel business. Sequence’s sales in turn dropped 70% for a 11 month period. There was no sign of market improvement and after only owning the business a few years it was the smartest decision to close the Sequence Lighting, it was a tough market, and  a very tough decision.

In hind sight the experience was a great Gift to Tom, not knowing what the future held for Tom.

There were virtually no jobs at this time, but, Tom had 8 job opportunities come his way. (someone was definitely looking after him from above)

Tom pursued a career and Interview with “Aikenheads Home Improvement Stores”, one of the first Big Box Retailers in Canada, fashioned after “Home Depot” in the US.

Days later started as a Lighting Electrical Department manager in training at the very first Aikenheads store on Ellesmere Rd. in Scarbourgh Ontario. For 2 1/2 months Tom helped hire up, train and put together a team for the 2nd store in Woodbridge, Ontario. Just after opening Tom was promoted to an Assistant Store manager for the Woodbridge Store. (From a “Mom & Pop store to a “Big Box Store”)

Five months later Tom was asked because of his lighting experience to come to the Canadian Head office for Aikenheads to help as a temporary Buyer for Lighting for 3 months, to help the present Lighting Electrical Buyer. Tom always loves a challenge, and took the position.

Three & half months went by; Tom was again at a crossroad. Tom was offered the position of General Store Manager in Markham, Ontario to hire up and train a team of over 400 associates. Shocked by the opportunity, but excited, Tom took the challenge. Many future store managers were trained in the Markham store during the store set up.

Five months later it was announced that the Great “Home Depot” was merging with Aikenheads. WOW! What a ride!

The President and Founders, and many of the VPs, and executives of Home Depot came to Tom’s store to see and study the merger and how best to serve the customers.

One year from becoming store manager and setting up a successful store, Tom was offered a promotion, again. This offer was because of his time and success as a Temporary Merchant/Buyer Tom was offered the great position of “National Lighting & Electrical Buyer for Home Depot Canada.  Back Tom goes to Home Depot Canadian Head office in Scarborough.

Yes it continues, one Year later Home Depot Canada opened a second Buying in Western Canada, offering relocation for Tom and his family to Beautiful British Columbia and their new office in Coquitlam BC. The new promotion was as Western Canada “Kitchen, Plumbing, and Bath Merchandiser/Buyer”
